Windshield repair in Raleigh is the small job that saves a big one. A rock chip from a truck on the Beltline is usually the size of a pea when it happens. Left alone through a few hot afternoons, a cold morning with the defroster on full, and the potholes on a side street, it can run into a crack that no resin will hold. Caught early, most chips can be filled so they stop spreading and the factory seal around the windshield stays untouched.

What damage can be repaired
The industry’s repair standard is ROLAGS, the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard, administered by the National Windshield Repair Division. Its published guidance is that ‘Stone-breaks up to two inches in diameter and single line cracks up to 14-inches are repairable.’ Those are the outer limits of what the standard allows, not a promise that every break that size will repair well.
In everyday terms, shops use rules of thumb. A widely used one is that damage smaller than a dollar bill, about six inches, is likely repairable. Impex describes small chips as those smaller than a quarter. And Impex’s rule for deciding is that a repair may be possible if the chip or crack is small, shallow and away from the edges of the glass.
| Damage | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chip smaller than a quarter, away from the edge | Repair | Small and shallow: resin fills it and stops it spreading |
| Star break or bullseye up to about two inches | Often repair | Inside the ROLAGS limit for stone breaks |
| Single crack of six inches or less (a ‘short crack’ in ROLAGS terms) | Often repair | Short cracks can be stopped and filled |
| Single crack longer than six inches | Depends | ROLAGS allows up to 14 inches; position and age decide it |
| Crack that reaches the edge of the glass | Replace | An edge crack sits where the glass is bonded to the car |
| Damage right in front of the driver or the camera | Usually replace | A repair can leave a mark in the line of sight |
ROLAGS defines a short crack as six inches (150 mm) or less, a long crack as more than six inches, and an edge crack as one that extends to an edge. If yours is past repair, our windshield replacement in Raleigh page explains the full job.
Why to repair a chip quickly in Raleigh
A chip is a small break in the outer layer of the laminated glass. Every change of temperature makes the glass expand and contract, and every jolt through the suspension flexes it. The edges of a chip are where that stress gathers, which is why a chip that has sat quietly for weeks can run across the glass in an afternoon. Central North Carolina gives a windshield plenty of both: hot sun on a parked car followed by a cold blast from the air conditioning, or a frosty morning followed by the defroster on high.
Dirt and water work into an open chip as well, and a contaminated break does not take resin as cleanly as a fresh one. Until the repair, a piece of clear tape over the chip keeps it cleaner. Avoid pouring hot water on frosted glass and avoid pointing the defroster straight at the chip on full heat. Neither one fixes the chip, but both reduce the stress on the break.
How a windshield chip repair works
A chip repair fills the break with a clear resin that bonds to the glass. A typical repair goes like this:
- The technician inspects the damage and confirms it is a repair, not a replacement.
- Loose glass and dirt are cleared from the impact point.
- A tool is fixed over the chip and the air is drawn out of the break so resin can flow into it.
- Resin is fed into the break until the legs of the chip are filled.
- The resin is cured, and the surface is finished flush with the glass.
A good repair stops the chip spreading and makes it much less visible, but it does not make the glass look new: a small mark often remains where the stone hit. That is one reason damage straight in front of the driver is usually replaced instead.

Repair or replacement: how they compare
| Chip or crack repair | Windshield replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | Resin is injected into the break | The windshield is cut out and a new one is bonded in with urethane |
| Factory seal | Left untouched | Replaced with a new urethane bond |
| Camera calibration | Not usually needed, because the glass stays in place | Usually needed on cars with a forward camera |
| Wait before driving | Usually short | Impex says most cars are back on the road within two hours |
| Insurance | Comprehensive claim, deductible per your policy | Comprehensive claim, deductible per your policy |
The camera row is worth noticing. I-CAR lists removing the windshield as an event that may require the forward camera to be aimed again; a repair does not remove the glass. On a car with lane keeping and automatic braking, repairing a chip in time can spare you the calibration that comes with a replacement. See ADAS calibration in Raleigh for what calibration involves.
Paying for windshield repair in North Carolina
Glass breakage is a comprehensive loss in North Carolina. The NC Department of Insurance says comprehensive coverage pays the cost of repair less any deductible, and North Carolina has no law that waives the deductible for glass. Some insurers choose to waive the deductible for a chip repair, because a repair now costs them less than a windshield later, and some policies include full glass coverage. Ask your insurer which applies to you.
A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so the NCDOI’s Safe Driver Incentive Plan adds no insurance points for it. Insurers can still look at how often you claim. If the repair costs less than your deductible, paying for it yourself is often the simpler route. Impex works with all major insurance providers either way, and under G.S. 58-3-180 the choice of repair shop is yours. Read insurance and claims for the steps.
Where rock chips come from around Raleigh
Most chips come from stones thrown up by the vehicle in front. Raleigh’s interstates carry heavy truck traffic: I-40 from RDU through the south side of the city toward Garner and Clayton, the I-440 Beltline around the centre, I-540 across the north, and I-87 east toward Knightdale and Wendell. NCDOT’s Complete 540 extension, with its second phase toward Knightdale scheduled for completion in 2028, adds construction traffic in the southeast of the county.
North Carolina requires trucks to keep their loads from falling or blowing off. Under G.S. 20-116(g), trucks over 7,500 pounds carrying rock, gravel or stone have to keep the load six inches below the walls and securely covered by a tarpaulin or other suitable covering. Leaving more distance behind a gravel truck, and behind any truck with stones caught on its tires and mud flaps, is the simplest way to avoid a chip. Our article on gravel trucks and rock chips has more on what to do after a stone hits.
A repaired chip and the NC inspection
North Carolina’s annual safety inspection (G.S. 20-183.3) checks your windshield wipers, not the glass itself, and no NC statute sets a crack size. A chip is not an inspection item. It is a safety item: a crack that grows into your line of sight makes the road harder to see. The NC windshield laws page explains the rules.

Questions people ask
Is windshield repair worth it?
Usually, when the damage is small. A repair stops a chip spreading, keeps the factory seal and spares a camera calibration, and it costs less than a new windshield. It will not make the glass look new, and damage at the edge or in front of the driver is better replaced.
Can a 12 inch crack in a windshield be repaired?
Possibly. ROLAGS allows single line cracks up to 14 inches to be repaired, but many shops replace cracks over about six inches as a rule of thumb, and an edge crack or one across the driver’s view is normally replaced. The technician decides at the car.
How long does a windshield chip repair take?
A chip repair is a short job compared with a replacement, and because the glass stays in the car you can usually drive soon after. The technician will tell you on the day.
Will a repaired chip disappear?
Not completely. The resin fills the break and makes it far less visible, but a faint mark often stays where the stone hit.
Does insurance pay for chip repair in NC?
Comprehensive coverage normally pays for glass damage less your deductible. North Carolina has no zero-deductible glass law, but some insurers waive the deductible for repairs and some policies include full glass coverage. Check your policy.
