Does my side window need replacing?
Impex’s guidance is short: if your side window is cracked, shattered, or will not roll up or down properly, it likely needs to be replaced, and even small cracks can compromise safety and should be looked at by a technician. Most door glass is tempered, which is made to break into small pieces when it fails, so a cracked or shattered door window is replaced, not repaired.
A window that will not move is a different question. Sometimes the glass has come off its track or broken inside the door; sometimes the fault is in the motor or the mechanism that lifts the glass. Tell us what you see when you call, and we will say whether it sounds like a glass job.
How a side window replacement is done
- The part is matched by VIN. Door glass differs by door, by body style and sometimes by trim: tinted or clear, tempered or laminated, with or without an antenna or a heating element. Impex orders by VIN-based verification.
- The door is opened up. The inside door trim comes off so the technician can reach the window mechanism and the broken glass inside the door.
- The broken glass comes out. What is left of the pane is removed and the loose pieces are cleared from inside the door, where they would otherwise rattle and jam the new window.
- The new glass goes in. It is fitted to the window mechanism and into its channels and seals.
- It is tested. The window is run up and down and checked for a clean seal at the top.
- The trim goes back on. You can drive away straight away.
Vent and fixed side glass
Some vehicles have a small fixed pane at the front or rear of a door, and many SUVs, minivans and wagons have a fixed quarter window behind the rear doors. These do not move, and on many vehicles they are bonded in rather than set in a channel, so they are handled more like a small windshield. They are also less often kept in stock, which is why a VIN and a photo help us quote them accurately.
After a break-in in Raleigh
- Call the police if anything was taken, and keep the report number for your insurer. Impex’s insurance guide notes that a report is not usually needed for a glass claim unless vandalism or theft happened.
- Photograph the window, the door and the inside of the car.
- Take out anything valuable and anything rain would spoil.
- Tape heavy plastic over the opening, onto the paint around the frame, if the car has to stay outside.
- Sit on a towel or brush the seat carefully until the glass is cleared.
ADAS and side windows
A side window replacement does not normally need driver-assistance calibration. Impex’s guidance is that ADAS recalibration is typically needed after a windshield replacement, not a side window, but its technicians still check the vehicle’s safety systems to make sure everything works. If your vehicle has cameras in its side mirrors for a surround view or blind spot system, tell us; the mirror is separate from the door glass, but we will look. For the camera behind the windshield, see ADAS calibration in Raleigh.
Side glass, tint and North Carolina law
The new glass must be safety glass: G.S. 20-135 requires safety glass wherever glass is used in the doors and windows of a North Carolina vehicle made on or after January 1, 1936. If you put tint film on the new window, G.S. 20-127 limits it to at least 35 percent total light transmission and 20 percent or less reflectance on windows other than the windshield, with exceptions such as windows behind the driver on minivans and pickups. A driver with tinted windows must also roll down the driver’s window when a law enforcement officer approaches, under the newer G.S. 20-127(g). Tint has not been part of the annual safety inspection since December 1, 2025, but the limits still apply on the road. See NC windshield laws and the article on NC window tint rules.
Paying for a side window
Impex’s guidance is that most comprehensive policies cover side window damage. In North Carolina comprehensive pays glass breakage less your deductible, and the state has no zero-deductible glass law, so on a single door window the deductible may be close to the cost of the job. Compare the two before you file. You choose the shop under G.S. 58-3-180, and Impex works with all major insurance providers. See insurance and claims.
