I-40, US 70 and the Clayton commute

Clayton is served by I-40, US 70 and US 70 Business, and the US 70 Clayton Bypass carries through traffic around the town. US 70 runs on southeast to I-95 at Smithfield. That makes the Clayton commute a highway commute with heavy truck traffic in both directions, and highway speed is what turns a small stone into a chip. NCDOT’s Complete 540 project has also linked the Triangle Expressway to I-40 and US 70, with its first phase opened in September 2024.

North Carolina tries to keep stones on trucks. Under G.S. 20-116(g), trucks over 7,500 pounds carrying rock, gravel or stone must keep the load six inches below the walls and securely covered by a tarpaulin or other suitable covering. Leaving a longer gap behind a truck on I-40 is still the simplest protection a driver has.

What can be repaired

The ROLAGS repair standard says stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches are repairable. In practice the call depends on more than size. Impex’s rule is that a repair may be possible when the damage is small, shallow and away from the edges, and it treats chips smaller than a quarter as small chips. Damage that reaches the edge of the glass, sits right in front of the driver, or has grown into a long crack is usually replaced.

  • Repair: a fresh chip the size of a coin or smaller, away from the edge and out of the driver’s direct view.
  • Probably repair: a star break or a short crack of a few inches, if it has not reached the edge.
  • Replace: an edge crack, a long crack across the glass, or damage in front of the driver or the forward camera.

Repair is worth doing quickly. Heat on a parked car and cold air from the vents flex the glass, and the edges of a chip are where a crack starts. A piece of clear tape over the chip keeps dirt and water out until the repair. The full guide is on windshield repair in Raleigh.

How the repair is done at your car

The technician cleans the impact point, fixes a tool over the chip, draws the air out of the break and fills it with clear resin, then cures and finishes it flush with the glass. The repair stops the chip spreading and makes it much less visible, though a faint mark often stays. Because the windshield stays in the car, the factory seal is untouched and the forward camera does not normally need calibrating.

When Clayton needs a new windshield

If the damage is past repair, the same mobile visit can replace the windshield. Impex checks the glass against your VIN, bonds the new windshield in with urethane, and calibrates the camera on site if your vehicle has one. Impex says most replacements take about one hour plus a short curing period. See windshield replacement in Raleigh and ADAS calibration in Raleigh.

Paying for a chip repair

Glass damage is a comprehensive claim in North Carolina, paid less your deductible, and the state has no zero-deductible glass law. Some insurers waive the deductible for a chip repair because it costs them less than a windshield later. If the repair costs less than your deductible, paying directly is often simpler. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose the shop. See insurance and claims.

Clayton is one of several towns we cover; Garner sits between Clayton and Raleigh on I-40, and the full list is on the Raleigh service areas page.

How big a chip can be repaired?

Under the ROLAGS standard, stone breaks up to two inches across can be repairable. Impex treats chips smaller than a quarter, small, shallow and away from the edges, as repair jobs.

Does a chip repair need camera calibration?

Not normally. The windshield stays in place, so the camera is not moved. Calibration usually follows a replacement.
