Questions people ask
Does NC replace windshields for free?
No. North Carolina has no state program that pays for windshields and no law that waives the glass deductible, unlike Florida and South Carolina. Comprehensive coverage normally pays for glass breakage less your deductible; some policies include full glass coverage. See insurance and claims.
Is a windshield advertised as free really free?
Only if your policy pays all of it. The deductible is set by your insurance policy, not the glass company. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose the shop and your insurer pays the same amount either way, so pick on the work: the glass, the calibration and how it is installed.
Do I call the glass company or my insurer first?
Either. Impex works with all major insurance providers and can handle the claim with your insurer, including the billing. If you call your insurer first, tell them which shop you want; an insurer that recommends a shop must tell you that you are under no obligation to use it.
Can a 12 inch crack in a windshield be repaired?
Sometimes. The ROLAGS repair standard allows single line cracks up to 14 inches. Many shops replace cracks longer than about six inches as a rule of thumb, and a crack at the edge or across the driver’s view is normally replaced. See windshield repair in Raleigh.
Is windshield repair worth it?
For small damage, usually. A repair stops the chip spreading, keeps the factory seal, avoids a camera calibration and costs less than a windshield. It does leave a faint mark, so damage straight in front of the driver is often better replaced.
How expensive is replacing a windshield?
It depends on the vehicle and the glass. A windshield with a camera bracket, rain sensor, heated area or acoustic layer costs more, and calibration adds to the job. Impex quotes by VIN, and its quotes are meant to be fully inclusive. With insurance, your share is usually the comprehensive deductible.
What does it cost to replace a car window in Raleigh?
The price depends on the vehicle, the door and the glass type. Call with the year, make and model and which window broke, and Impex will quote it. See car window repair in Raleigh.
What is the law on cracked windshields in NC?
North Carolina’s annual safety inspection (G.S. 20-183.3) checks the windshield wipers, not the glass, and no NC statute sets a crack size. Safety glass is required by G.S. 20-135. Read the NC windshield laws guide.
How long can I drive with a cracked windshield?
There is no fixed time in North Carolina law, but every week of heat, cold and potholes gives a crack a chance to grow, and a crack in your line of sight is a safety problem now. A chip is worth repairing before it runs.
How long does windshield replacement take?
Impex says about one hour plus a short curing period, with most cars back on the road within two hours. Camera calibration, if your car needs it, takes 30 minutes to 2 hours.
How long does a side window take?
Impex says 30 to 60 minutes, and you can drive straight away because there is no curing wait.
Do I need my camera calibrated after a new windshield?
If your car has a forward camera behind the mirror, usually yes. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site after the replacement. See ADAS calibration in Raleigh.
Will a glass claim add points to my insurance?
No SDIP points: a comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident. Insurers may still look at how often you claim when they decide on renewals.
Do you use OEM glass?
Impex offers OEM and high-quality aftermarket glass, and its technicians recommend the option that fits your vehicle and budget. If insurance pays, ask how your policy treats OEM glass.
Can you replace a windshield in the rain?
Only under cover, such as a garage, carport or covered parking deck. The glass and frame have to be dry for the adhesive. See mobile windshield replacement in Raleigh.
What should I do after a new windshield is installed?
Wait for the drive-away time the technician gives you. For 24 hours, do not wash the car and do not slam the doors. If driver-assistance warnings behave oddly afterwards, contact us.
Do you repair back glass?
Back glass is tempered and breaks into small pieces, so it is replaced, not repaired. Impex reconnects and tests the defroster. See back glass replacement.
Does auto glass repair fix scratches?
Chip and crack repair fills breaks with resin; it is not a scratch treatment. Tell us what the damage looks like and we will say whether it is a repair, a replacement or neither.
Where does the technician do the work?
At your home, your workplace or wherever the vehicle is parked in Raleigh or the nearby towns, on a level spot with room to open both front doors and dry glass. A garage, carport or covered parking deck lets the work go ahead in rain.
What do I need to tell you when I call?
The year, make and model, the VIN if you have it, which glass is damaged, where the car will be, and your insurer’s details if you are claiming. Impex uses the VIN to order the right glass.
Is Auto Glass Repair Raleigh the same company as Impex Auto Glass?
Yes. Auto Glass Repair Raleigh is the Raleigh mobile service of Impex Auto Glass, and calls and requests from this site go to Impex. See about Impex.
