Auto glass work we bring to Raleigh drivers

One page for each job, with what happens at the car, how long it takes and what to ask your insurer. If you already know what you need, the quote form at the top of this page goes straight to Impex.

How a mobile visit works

From the first call to driving away

  1. Tell us the vehicle

Call or send the form with the year, make and model and what is broken. Have the VIN handy: it is on the dash at the base of the windshield and on the driver’s door frame, and Impex uses it to order the right glass.

  2. Get the quote and a time

Impex quotes the job, works out with you whether it goes through your insurance, and agrees a time and a place: your home, your work, or wherever the car is parked.

  3. The work at your car

The technician takes out the damaged glass, sets the new part, reconnects what was attached to it, and calibrates the forward camera when your vehicle needs it.

  4. Drive away

You are told when it is safe to drive. After a windshield, Impex says most cars are back on the road within two hours of the job; side glass can be driven straight away.

Repair or replace

Chip, crack or new windshield: how the call is made

Most auto glass repair in Raleigh starts with one question: can this be fixed, or does the glass have to come out? Three things decide it, and size is only one of them. The others are depth and where the damage sits. Impex’s own rule is that a repair may be possible when a chip or crack is small, shallow and away from the edges of the glass. Once the damage is large, deep or runs to the edge, a full replacement is the safer job.

For size there is a published industry standard. ROLAGS, the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard run by the National Windshield Repair Division, says stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches long are repairable. Many shops work to a tighter rule of thumb: damage smaller than a dollar bill, about six inches, is likely repairable, and a chip smaller than a quarter usually is. Those are rules of thumb, not laws, and a technician still has to look at the glass.

Signs the windshield will need replacing

  • A crack that reaches the edge of the glass, where the windshield is bonded to the car
  • Damage right in front of the driver, where even a good repair can leave a blemish in your line of sight
  • Several chips or cracks at once, or a crack that has kept growing
  • Damage in the area the forward camera looks through, behind the rearview mirror
  • A break through both layers of the laminated glass

A new windshield brings a second job with it on most newer cars. The camera behind the mirror that runs lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control is mounted to the glass, and I-CAR lists removing the windshield as one of the events that may require that camera to be aimed again. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site after windshield replacement, and its technicians can do both static and dynamic calibrations in one visit. Impex says most calibrations take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. The details are on our ADAS calibration in Raleigh page.

If the damage is small, start with windshield repair in Raleigh. If it is past repair, windshield replacement in Raleigh walks through the whole visit. For door, quarter and rear glass, see car window repair in Raleigh.

Insurance and NC law

What North Carolina law says about your glass and your claim

In North Carolina, glass damage is normally a comprehensive claim. The NC Department of Insurance lists ‘Breakage of glass’ and ‘Missiles or falling objects’ among the losses that Other Than Collision (comprehensive) coverage pays for, and it pays ‘less any deductible’. So your comprehensive deductible usually applies to a windshield. North Carolina has no law that waives that deductible for glass, as Florida and South Carolina do. Some policies include full glass coverage, so check yours before you assume the cost.

You also decide who does the work. G.S. 58-3-180 says a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle ‘shall allow the claimant to select the repair service or source for the repair of the damage’, and that the insurer pays the same amount whichever shop you pick. If an insurer recommends a shop, it has to tell you that you are under no obligation to use it. Impex works with all major insurance providers, so choosing Impex for a mobile job in Raleigh does not take you outside your coverage.

A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it does not add Safe Driver Incentive Plan points to your policy. The NCDOI does note that many insurers look at how often you file claims, at-fault and not at fault, when they decide on renewals. A small chip repair is often worth asking your insurer about for that reason as well as the cost.

That inspection point surprises people. North Carolina’s safety inspection list covers brakes, lights, horn, steering, windshield wipers, directional signals, tires, mirrors and emissions equipment. No North Carolina statute or inspection rule sets a crack size for a windshield. A crack in your line of sight is still a safety problem, and the glass is part of how the car protects you in a crash: the Auto Glass Safety Council says the windshield and side glass are part of the passenger restraint system. How a claim usually runs, step by step, is on our insurance and claims page, more questions are answered on the auto glass questions page, and who Impex is is on about Impex Auto Glass.

The short version

The statutes, on one card

G.S. 58-3-180: you choose the repair shop, and the insurer pays the same either way. G.S. 20-183.3: the annual safety inspection checks the windshield wipers, not the glass itself. G.S. 20-127(a): a vehicle with a windshield must have a wiper in good working order. G.S. 20-135: safety glass is required in windshields, windows and doors. The full guide is on our NC windshield laws page.

Questions

Auto glass questions from Raleigh drivers

Where is Impex Auto Glass based, and how does service in Raleigh work?

Impex Auto Glass has two shops in North Carolina: 8748 W Market St in Greensboro and 5641 David Cox Rd in Charlotte. In Raleigh and the towns around it, Impex works as a mobile service: a technician comes to your home, your work or wherever the vehicle is parked. The mobile windshield replacement page explains what the visit needs.

Can a chip be repaired, or do I need a new windshield?

It depends on size, depth and position. ROLAGS, the windshield repair standard, treats stone breaks up to two inches across and single cracks up to 14 inches as repairable, but damage at the edge of the glass or right in front of the driver usually means a new windshield. See windshield repair in Raleigh.

Does NC replace windshields for free?

No. North Carolina has no state program that pays for windshields and no law that waives the deductible for glass. Comprehensive coverage normally pays for glass breakage, less your deductible, unless your policy includes full glass coverage. Your agent or your policy documents will tell you which you have.

Is a windshield that is advertised as free actually free?

Only when your policy pays the whole bill. The deductible is set by your insurance policy, not by the glass shop. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who does the work and your insurer pays the same amount either way, so compare on the job itself: the glass, the calibration and how the work is done.

Can a 12 inch crack in a windshield be repaired?

Under the ROLAGS standard a single line crack up to 14 inches can be repairable, so a 12 inch crack is not automatically a replacement. Many shops replace anything over about six inches as a rule of thumb, and a crack that reaches the edge or crosses the driver’s view is normally replaced. The technician decides at the car.

What is the law on cracked windshields in NC?

North Carolina’s annual safety inspection (G.S. 20-183.3) checks the windshield wipers, not the glass, and no NC statute sets a crack size. Safety glass is required (G.S. 20-135) and wipers must work (G.S. 20-127(a)). A crack in your line of sight is still a safety problem. Our NC windshield laws guide has the detail.

How long does a mobile windshield replacement take?

Impex says a windshield replacement takes about one hour, plus a short curing period, and that most cars are back on the road within two hours. If the forward camera needs calibrating, Impex puts that at 30 minutes to 2 hours more, depending on the vehicle.

Will a glass claim add points to my insurance?

A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points. Insurers may still look at how often you file claims. The insurance and claims page explains the steps.
