ADAS Radar Calibration in Raleigh, NC

ADAS radar calibration is the aiming of the radar sensor at the front of your vehicle, the one that measures the distance and speed of the traffic ahead. It is a different job from the camera calibration that follows a new windshield, and it comes up after different kinds of work: a new bumper, a grille replaced after a minor hit, front-end repairs, or a new radar unit. Impex Auto Glass performs ADAS radar calibration on site, without the need for a separate dealership appointment. This page explains what the radar does, when it needs calibrating and how the work is done in Raleigh.

What the front radar does and where it sits

I-CAR says forward radar sensors sit in or behind the front bumper or grille, and feed adaptive cruise control, collision braking and collision warning. On many vehicles the sensor sits behind the badge in the centre of the grille or behind a flat panel low in the bumper. Where a car has both a camera and radar, the two often work together: the camera reads what an object is and where the lane runs, and the radar measures how far away it is and how fast it is closing.

The safety value is real. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that forward collision warning with automatic braking cuts rear-end crashes in half. A radar that points slightly up, down or to one side can see the wrong lane, warn late or brake for a sign at the side of the road.

When radar calibration is needed

I-CAR’s guidance is that calibration is normally required after the radar itself is replaced, and may be required after the bumper or grille is removed or after front structural repair. Requirements vary by vehicle, so the manufacturer’s procedure for your year, make and model is what decides it. Common reasons drivers in Raleigh need it:

  • A new or refitted front bumper cover or grille, including after a minor parking lot hit.
  • A replaced radar sensor or bracket.
  • Front-end structural repair after a collision.
  • A warning that adaptive cruise or collision warning is unavailable, after any work at the front of the vehicle.
  • Wheel alignment or suspension work, on vehicles whose manufacturer lists it.

A windshield replacement does not usually call for radar calibration, because the radar sits in the bumper or grille, not on the glass. Impex notes that radar units can shift when a windshield or front-end component is replaced or repaired, so its technicians check whether your vehicle’s procedure includes the radar.

How radar calibration is done

Radar calibration follows the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure. I-CAR describes static radar targets as generally metal and pyramid shaped, and notes that the procedure needs a large area clear of metal objects, since the radar reads metal around it. A scan tool runs the aiming routine with the target set at a measured distance and angle in front of the car. Some vehicles use a driving procedure instead, or as well, much like the dynamic camera calibration.

Impex says it performs ADAS radar calibration on site using diagnostic and alignment technology, that its technicians follow manufacturer-specific procedures so the radar sensors are correctly positioned and communicating with the vehicle’s safety systems, and that completing calibration immediately after service avoids a separate dealership appointment. Because a static radar procedure needs a large, level space clear of metal, tell us the vehicle when you book and we will confirm where yours can be done.

Many vehicles need only one; some need both after a front-end repair that also cracked the windshield. One visit can cover both where your vehicle allows it.

If you are not sure which sensor your vehicle has, look at the options list for adaptive cruise control or forward collision warning, or tell us the year, make, model and VIN. We will check what the manufacturer’s procedure calls for before the visit, so the right equipment comes with the technician.

Paying for radar calibration

How radar calibration is paid depends on why it is needed. After a collision, it is usually handled along with the collision repair. After a comprehensive loss, such as a stone, it follows that claim, paid less your deductible in North Carolina. Ask your insurer whether the calibration is included before the work. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose the repair service, and Impex works with all major insurance providers. See insurance and claims.

Questions people ask

Does every windshield replacement need radar calibration?

No. Front radar sits in or behind the bumper or grille, so a windshield job usually needs camera calibration, not radar. Impex checks what your vehicle’s procedure requires.

When does the front radar need calibrating?

I-CAR says calibration is normally required after radar replacement and may be required after the bumper or grille is removed or after front structural repair.

Do I need to go to a dealer for radar calibration?

No. Impex performs ADAS radar calibration on site, without the need for a separate dealership appointment.

How is radar calibrated?

With a scan tool and, for static procedures, a metal target set at a measured position in front of the car in a large area clear of metal objects, following the manufacturer’s procedure.
